Sloane
Feminine · “from the Irish for "host" or "army”
Sloane is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 24,670 girls against 416 boys since 1880.
Sloane began as an Irish family name, carried out of Ulster and into English on ships and in registers, and it kept the shape of a single syllable all the way. It is the name behind Sloane Square in Chelsea, which honors the Irish-born physician Sir Hans Sloane, whose collection became the founding core of the British Museum. Said aloud it is one clean sound, closing on that long open vowel.

Where it comes from
From Ó Sluagháin to Sloane
The story of Sloane
Sloane is a surname first, from the Irish Ó Sluagháin — a family line recorded chiefly in Ulster, later spelled Sloan and Sloane by English-speaking clerks. Sir Hans Sloane, born in County Down in the seventeenth century and physician in London, carried it into public memory; the Chelsea square named for him later lent its name to the 1980s British phrase "Sloane Ranger" for a certain kind of well-heeled young Londoner. In the United States the surname became a first name, as so many Irish and Scottish surnames did, and the spelling with the final e settled in as the more common one for girls. A Sloane has since won the US Open, which put the name on American sports pages.
Meaning
from the Irish for "host" or "army" — often rendered "raider" or "warrior"
The surname is an anglicization of Ó Sluagháin, built on Irish sluagh, "host, throng, army"; the personal name behind it is a diminutive of that word.

The Meredith test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Sloane's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Meredith climbed just as high around 1980, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Meredith's path sketches the road Sloane is walking now.
Sloane is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- One syllable and one obvious pronunciation: nobody has to ask twice how to say it.
- A documented Irish surname with centuries of written record behind it, not a recent coinage.
- Two accepted spellings, Sloane and Sloan, both already familiar to English speakers.
- Works in full on a form or a roster without needing a nickname to soften it.
- Sloane and Sloan sound identical, so expect a lifetime of confirming which spelling — the final e is the part people drop.
- In Britain, "Sloane" still carries the echo of the 1980s "Sloane Ranger", a label for posh young Londoners. It reads as class-marked to some British ears in a way it does not in the US.
- At one syllable it resists shortening, so there is little to fall back on if a child wants a different everyday name.
- The same surname is given to boys as well, more often in the Sloan spelling. That mostly means the odd mistaken assumption on paper rather than any real confusion in person.
