One-syllable names: said in a single beat

97 names · 47 girls · 50 boys · records through 2025

One syllable is the shortest a name can be and still be a name. There is no rhythm to get wrong, no second beat to swallow, and nothing for a stranger to guess at.

This guide has 97 names: 47 girl names and 50 boy names. Names of exactly 1 syllable inside the current national rankings, ordered by today's rank. Built from US Social Security birth records through 2025. Tap + beside any name to keep it on your shortlist as you read.

Before the names

The records show this is mostly a boys' habit: about eight hundred one-syllable boys' names currently chart against roughly three hundred and sixty for girls, and the boys' side reaches much further up the top 100.

A single beat also sets up the surname. Against a long or many-syllabled last name it does work a longer first name cannot; against a one-syllable surname it can read clipped. This is the one style choice best tested aloud, at speaking volume, before it is made.
