The story of Zane
Ebenezer Zane, a founder of Wheeling, cut Zane's Trace through the Ohio wilderness, the first road across the territory, and Congress paid him in land where the town of Zanesville grew. His descendant Pearl Zane Gray, a dentist, dropped the Pearl, changed Gray to Grey and became Zane Grey, whose westerns sold in the millions and made Zane a first name. In the Arabic-speaking world a name of the same sound, Zain, means beauty, and some families choose it with that in mind. The name is recorded for a few girls, but it is overwhelmingly a boy's.
