The story of Jorge
Jorge Luis Borges was appointed director of the National Library of Argentina in the mid-nineteen-fifties, at almost exactly the point when his eyesight failed completely. He had inherited the condition from his father and had been losing it for years. He wrote about the coincidence in a poem, calling it God's splendid irony to give him at once eight hundred thousand books and darkness, and noted that two of the library's previous directors had also been blind. He held the post for eighteen years, could not read a line of what he was in charge of, and dictated everything he wrote from then on. His account of blindness is unsentimental: he said it came on gradually, like a slow summer dusk, and that the last color to go was yellow.
