Niko is the short, everyday form that grew up out of Nikolaos, the Greek name carried across Europe by the cult of Saint Nicholas of Myra. In Finland, Croatia, Slovenia and Georgia it long ago stopped being a nickname and became a name in its own right, written on birth certificates without any longer version behind it. Two syllables, both open, and it lands the same way in almost every language that has borrowed it.

Niko first appears in US birth records in 1962 — 63 years ago. The typical Niko is a kid of about 7 — this name's wave is very recent. About 14,500 people named Niko are estimated to be alive in the US today.

The story of Niko
The parent name, Nikolaos, was in use in the Greek world well before the fourth century, when Nicholas of Myra became one of the most widely venerated saints in Christendom — the reason the name spread from Greece into Russia, Italy, Germany, France and eventually English. Everywhere it went, speakers cut it down: Nicholas to Nick, Nikolai to Kolya, Nikolaos to Nikos, Nikolaus to Niko. In Finland and across the former Yugoslavia that short form settled permanently as an independent given name, and in Georgia, Niko has stood alone for generations. It reached American records in the twentieth century, and its real growth here has come very recently, riding the same wave that brought other short vowel-ending boys' names into common use.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Niko went to 1,046 boys in 2025, but Nico, Nikko and Nicco are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 3,297, which makes it the 111th most-given boys’ name of the year — 214 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 518 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 1,633 for Niko itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Kendall test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Niko's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kendall climbed just as high around 1993, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kendall's path sketches the road Niko is walking now.
Niko sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Complete as it stands — no long form to explain, though Nicholas, Nikola and Nikolai are all available if a fuller name is ever wanted.
- Recognized across Finnish, Greek, Croatian, Georgian, German and Italian speakers, with the same sound in each.
- Two syllables, spelled the way it sounds once the K is heard, and easy for a small child to say and write.
- A line running back to Greek Nikolaos and the fourth-century saint who spread it through Europe.
- Niko, Nico and Nikko all exist, and all three are in real use. Expect to spell it fairly often, and to see the other two come back at you in email and on forms.
- Many Americans will assume it is short for Nicholas and may ask for the 'real' name. That is easy to answer, but it will come up.
- The name's growth here is very recent, so a Niko will likely be the only one in his class while the name still reads as unfamiliar to older generations — a combination that suits some families and not others.
