The story of Niko
The -o ending on women's names has a specific American history. It arrived through clippings of longer names — Josephine gives Jo, Florence gives Flo, Cleopatra gives Cleo — and by the 1940s it had become a recognizable style in its own right, associated with a brisk and unfussy register. Writers and film gave it currency; women who wanted to be taken seriously in male-dominated fields used it. Niko belongs to that tradition and is unusual only in being a clipping of a name, Nicole, that was itself very fashionable at the time. In Finland, Croatia and Georgia, Niko is an ordinary men's name and always has been.
Meaning
victory of the people
Greek Nikolaos joins nike, 'victory', to laos, 'the people', and it gives Nicholas, Nicole, Nikolai, Niels and their short forms. Niko is a standard clipping across several languages — Finnish, Croatian and Georgian all use it as a full name for men. On an American girl it is more usually a clipping of Nicole or Nicola. The meaning is the same in either case.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Aurelie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Niko's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Aurelie climbed just as high around 1915, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Aurelie's path sketches the road Niko is walking now.
Niko sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
