The story of Sammi
The -i ending arrived in American girls' naming in the late 1960s and was dominant through the 1970s. It replaced the traditional -ie and -y diminutive endings on a whole cohort of names, and the change carried real information at the time: -ie read as old-fashioned and childish, -i read as contemporary and adult. Jodi, Traci, Staci, Kerri, Sherri, Randi and Sammi all peak within a decade. The fashion reversed almost completely by 1990, and the same names now read as tightly dated to their decade — which is what happens to every purely orthographic fashion in naming.

God has heard, in the Samuel reading
Sammi serves as a short form of two names with different situations. Samuel is Hebrew Shemu'el, generally read as 'God has heard' or 'name of God' — the biblical explanation, given when Hannah names her son, connects it to shama, 'to hear'. Samantha's origin, by contrast, has never been established; it appears in American records from the late eighteenth century with no European precedent. So the meaning depends on which parent a bearer has, and one of the two has no answer.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Sammi went to 19 girls in 2025, but Sami, Sammy and Samy are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 77, which makes it the 883rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,233 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 20,874 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 84,593 for Sammi itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Calvin test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Sammi's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Calvin climbed just as high around 1926, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Calvin's path sketches the road Sammi is walking now.
Sammi sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
