Sami is a short form that has become a name, and which long name stands behind it depends on the family: Samantha in most English-speaking households, Samira or Salma in Arabic-speaking ones. It is also a complete Arabic name in its own right, and the northern European people of Lapland are called by the same four letters.

The story of Sami
Samantha appears in American records from the eighteenth century with no clear parent, which is unusual for a name that became so common; the best guess treats it as a feminine built on Samuel, and no evidence settles it. Every long name gets clipped, and Sam, Sammy and Sami all followed. The -i spelling belongs to the mid and late twentieth century, the same habit that produced Jodi, Toni and Ricki, and it also happens to match the standard transliteration of a real Arabic name.
Meaningscholars disagree
elevated, in Arabic; otherwise from Samantha
Arabic sami means high or elevated and is a genuine name, given mostly to boys. In American English Sami is a clipping of Samantha, whose own origin is unsettled: a feminine of Samuel is the usual guess and cannot be shown. The Sami people of northern Scandinavia carry an unrelated name from their own language.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Sami went to 27 girls in 2025, but Sammy, Sammi and Samy are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 77, which makes it the 883rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,995 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 20,874 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 59,528 for Sami itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Jeff test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Sami's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jeff climbed just as high around 1960, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jeff's path sketches the road Sami is walking now.
Sami sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

Where Sami is headed
Sami should hold steady through 2030 — the curve is flat, and flat curves are the most predictable kind. Its history is short or jumpy, though, so read this as a sketch rather than a promise.

The trade-off
- Four letters and two syllables: easy to write and impossible to mispronounce in English.
- Samantha or Samira stands behind it as a formal option in most families.
- It works comfortably for a child of either sex, which some families want.
- Sami, Sammy and Sammi are all in use and said identically in English.
- It reads as a nickname to many people, who will ask what it is short for.
- The Arabic name of the same spelling is given mostly to boys, which occasionally causes confusion.
