Where it comes from

The story of Chyna

Place names have been given to American girls since the nineteenth century, when Georgia, Virginia and Carolina were ordinary, and the practice widened enormously in the twentieth: India, Asia, Paris, Egypt and China all appear in the records. The y spelling arrived in the nineteen-nineties, distinguishing the name from the country and from the crockery in writing while changing nothing in speech, and it was carried in those years by a well-known professional wrestler.

Meaning

the country; and by extension fine porcelain

Through Persian Chin and Sanskrit Cina, generally traced to the Qin dynasty, the first to unify the country. English acquired the word with the porcelain, which is why china means both the place and the cup.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Chyna went to 27 girls in 2025, but China is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 35, which makes it the 925th most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,953 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 45,922 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 59,528 for Chyna itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Everyone can say it and spell it after hearing it once, apart from the y.
  • It names a real place with several thousand years of documented history.
  • It sits within an established American group of place names given to daughters.
What to consider
  • China is the standard spelling, so the y will be corrected constantly.
  • Naming a child for a country invites questions the child did not choose to answer.
  • The word is in daily use for both a nation and a set of dishes, so it turns up everywhere.
