Feminine · “female”
China is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 4,608 girls against 10 boys since 1880.
There are two Chinas in the Americas and they have nothing to do with each other. One is the country. The other comes from Quechua, where china means female, and it has been an everyday Spanish word in Peru, Chile and Argentina for four centuries.

The story of China
Quechua was the administrative language of the Inca empire and it left a great many words in South American Spanish: papa for potato, cancha for a field, carpa for a tent, china for a female. In Argentina and Chile china became a word for a country woman and then, in some mouths, a term of affection and in others a slight, which is the ordinary fate of words that cross a class line. The country name traveled the other way entirely, arriving in Europe overland and by sea long before Europeans arrived in the Americas. The two words met on English-language birth certificates, where nothing marks which one a family meant.
Meaningscholars disagree
female, in the Quechua reading
Two unrelated sources. Quechua china means female or girl, and passed into South American Spanish as an ordinary word for a young woman. The country name reached Europe through Persian and Sanskrit, most likely from the Qin dynasty, and English later used it for porcelain because that is where the porcelain came from. A China in the United States may have been named from either.
Pronouncing China
CHY-nuh
Two syllables, stress on the first, as the country is said in English. The Spanish word is CHEE-nah, with a completely different first vowel, so the two readings do not sound alike at all.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Charolette test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. China's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Charolette climbed just as high around 1943, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Charolette's path sketches the road China is walking now.
China sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Two syllables that everyone in the English-speaking world can already say and spell.
- It has a documented history in two unrelated languages.
- It serves either child, since neither source is grammatically male or female in English.
- It is the name of a country, and that is what almost everyone will think of first.
- In Spanish it is an everyday word whose weight changes from country to country, warm in some and dismissive in others.
- In English, china is also the word for porcelain dishes.
- Nearly every child given this spelling is a girl, so the few boys will be misread on paper.
