The story of Edythe
Eadgyth was a real Anglo-Saxon name, carried by a daughter of Edward the Elder who married the Holy Roman Emperor, and by an abbess of Wilton who became a saint — which is why it survived the Conquest when most English women's names did not. It faded and returned strongly in the nineteenth century. Edythe is the ornamental respelling of that revival, and it peaked in America around 1917.
Meaning
prosperous in war
Through Edith, from the Old English Eadgyth — ead, 'riches' or 'blessedness', and gyth, 'war' or 'strife'. Both elements are standard in Anglo-Saxon naming; ead opens Edward, Edwin and Edgar, and gyth appears in a set of women's names of the period.

The trade-off
- A genuine Anglo-Saxon name with a documented royal and monastic history.
- Edie is available as a short form with real currency now.
- The meaning is transparent and both elements are well attested.
- The decorative letters do nothing audible, so the spelling has to be given every time.
- Edith is far commoner and will be assumed.
- It is period-coded to the early twentieth century.
