The story of Evangelia
Greek naming has always drawn on the vocabulary of the church, and Evangelos and Evangelia are among the clearest examples: the word itself, given as a name. The connection to the feast of the Annunciation, which in Greek is Evangelismos, means that in Greece the name day falls on the twenty-fifth of March, shared with the country's independence day. It is one of the most common Greek women's names, and it came to American records with Greek families from the early twentieth century.
Meaning
good news; gospel
Greek eu, good or well, joined to angelia, a message, from angelos, a messenger. The compound euangelion gave the New Testament its word for the good news, which Old English translated as god spel, whence gospel.

The Anthea test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Evangelia's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Anthea climbed just as high around 1959, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Anthea's path sketches the road Evangelia is walking now.
Evangelia sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is a complete phrase and one of the best-known words in Christianity.
- Evi and Lia are ready short forms and both are complete names elsewhere.
- It is instantly recognized across Greece, Cyprus and the Greek diaspora.
- Five syllables is a great deal of name for an American form, and it gets clipped.
- The Greek and English pronunciations differ noticeably in the middle of the word.
- It reads as explicitly religious, which is the point in some families and a consideration in others.
