The names themselves
Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Aidan
little fire
From Irish aodh, fire, with the diminutive ending -an. Aodh was also a divine name in the pre-Christian Irish material, and it survives in the surnames Mac Aodha and O hAodha, anglicized as McHugh, Magee and Mackay.
Aodh → Aodhan → Aedan → Aidan
How it traveled
Aodh is among the oldest recorded Irish names, and its diminutive belonged to the monk whom the king of Northumbria asked Iona to send him. He founded the monastery on Lindisfarne in the seventh century, and the English kept his name in the spelling Aidan.
Niko
victory of the people
From the Greek Nikolaos, built from nikē, 'victory', and laos, 'people'. Niko inherits the meaning of the full name it was clipped from.
Nikolaos → Nikolaus → Nikola → Niko
How it traveled
The parent name, Nikolaos, was in use in the Greek world well before the fourth century, when Nicholas of Myra became one of the most widely venerated saints in Christendom — the reason the name spread from Greece into Russia, Italy, Germany, France and eventually English. Everywhere it went, speakers cut it down: Nicholas to Nick, Nikolai to Kolya, Nikolaos to Nikos, Nikolaus to Niko.

Out loud, and in short
Aidan
AY-dun
Two syllables, stress on the first. The Irish Aodhan is closer to AY-dawn, with a fuller second syllable than English gives it. The dh in the Irish spelling is silent; it marks a consonant that stopped being pronounced centuries ago.
- Aido — An Irish informal pattern that clips a name and adds -o; rarely used in American families.
- A.J. — Used where a middle name supplies the second initial; the name itself resists shortening.
Niko
NEE-koh
NEE-koh follows the Greek, Finnish and Slavic pronunciation and is the usual one in the US. Some English speakers reach for NIK-oh by analogy with Nick; both are heard, so it helps to say it once at introductions.
- Nik — The obvious further clip; also spelled Nick, which is the standard short form of Nicholas in English.
- Nico — Used interchangeably with Niko in Italian and German-speaking families, and a full given name on its own in both.
- Nikos — The Greek everyday form, used where the family has Greek ties rather than as a general nickname.

The trade-offs, name by name
Aidan
Strengths
- A documented seventh-century bearer and a fixed feast day, so the history is checkable rather than atmospheric.
- This is the Irish spelling, which settles the argument about which version is the original.
- Two syllables, stress on the first, and nobody needs to be told how to say it.
To consider
- Aiden, Ayden and Aden all exist, so this spelling will be corrected and re-corrected for life.
- It arrived alongside a large cohort of rhyming names and will be heard as one of them.
- The very few girls given the spelling will be read as boys on every form.
Niko
Strengths
- Complete as it stands — no long form to explain, though Nicholas, Nikola and Nikolai are all available if a fuller name is ever wanted.
- Recognized across Finnish, Greek, Croatian, Georgian, German and Italian speakers, with the same sound in each.
- Two syllables, spelled the way it sounds once the K is heard, and easy for a small child to say and write.
To consider
- Niko, Nico and Nikko all exist, and all three are in real use. Expect to spell it fairly often, and to see the other two come back at you in email and on forms.
- Many Americans will assume it is short for Nicholas and may ask for the 'real' name. That is easy to answer, but it will come up.
- The name's growth here is very recent, so a Niko will likely be the only one in his class while the name still reads as unfamiliar to older generations — a combination that suits some families and not others.
