The names themselves

Where each name comes from

Jorge

farmer; one who works the earth

A Greek compound joining the word for earth to one meaning work. Spanish took the name from Latin and rebuilt it around its own sound system, which is why the g here is a throat sound and the ending is a vowel. The dragon everyone associates with the saint is a much later addition to his story.

Georgios → Georgius → Jorge

How it traveled

Jorge Luis Borges was appointed director of the National Library of Argentina in the mid-nineteen-fifties, at almost exactly the point when his eyesight failed completely. He had inherited the condition from his father and had been losing it for years.

Josue

"YHWH is salvation" — God is deliverance

From Hebrew Yehoshua, built from the divine name and the root for salvation or rescue.

Yehoshua → Iesous → Iosue → Josué → Josue

How it traveled

The name begins as Hebrew Yehoshua, borne in the Hebrew Bible by the leader who took the Israelites into Canaan after Moses and who gives his name to the Book of Joshua. When Jewish translators rendered the scriptures into Greek, Yehoshua became Iesous; Latin Bibles wrote it Iosue, and from that Latin spelling came Spanish and Portuguese Josué.

Out loud, and in short

Jorge

HOR-heh

Two syllables with the stress at the front. Both g's are the Spanish throat sound, which English has no letter for; Portuguese says the same spelling quite differently, closer to ZHOR-zhuh.

  • Coque — A Spanish familiar form built from the sound rather than the letters.
  • Yoyo — A Latin American affectionate form, doubled in the usual manner.

Josue

ho-SWEH

That is the Spanish pronunciation, stress on the last syllable, with a breathy h. In Portuguese and French it is close to zho-ZWEH. English speakers unfamiliar with the name often try JOSS-oo-ay or ho-SOO-ay, so expect to correct it now and then.

  • Josh — Borrowed from the English Joshua; common in English-speaking settings, school and work.
  • Jos — Informal clipping, mostly in writing and texting.
  • Sue — Rare, family-only shortening from the second syllable.

The trade-offs, name by name

Jorge

Strengths

  • It is one of the most widely used men's names in the Spanish-speaking world.
  • The meaning is documented, plain and immediately understandable.
  • It is short, regular and easy for Spanish speakers of any background.

To consider

  • English speakers cannot produce the Spanish sound and will say it several ways.
  • George will be written for it by people who assume they are the same name in the same language.
  • Portuguese and Spanish say the identical spelling differently, which matters in mixed families.

Josue

Strengths

  • The same name as Joshua, so its history and meaning are well documented and instantly recognizable once the connection is explained.
  • Spelled identically in Spanish, Portuguese and French, which makes it travel well across families and borders.
  • A documented line running from the Hebrew Bible through Greek and Latin scripture into modern Romance languages.

To consider

  • The Spanish spelling carries an accent, Josué, and US records generally drop it. Decide early which version goes on official documents, and expect the accent to vanish in forms and databases either way.
  • Pronunciation splits along language lines: ho-SWEH among Spanish speakers, various English approximations elsewhere. Most people named Josue end up answering to both.
  • Outside its strongest regions the name is less familiar, so it may be heard as Joshua or asked to be spelled. It has been in American records for a century, which makes the correction an easy one.
