The names themselves
Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Cruz
cross
From Latin crux, which became cruz in Spanish and Portuguese. The reference is specifically to the Christian cross rather than to crossing or a crossroads.
crux (Latin) → cruz (Spanish, Portuguese) → De la Cruz / Santa Cruz (surname) → Cruz (given name)
How it traveled
Latin crux gave Spanish and Portuguese cruz, and from the Middle Ages onward it attached itself to people: those who lived by a roadside cross, and those who took the name from devotion to the Holy Cross, whose feast falls in mid-September. It became one of the most widespread surnames in the Spanish-speaking world, often in the fuller forms De la Cruz and Santa Cruz, and traveled with Spanish across the Atlantic and to the Philippines.
Josue
"YHWH is salvation" — God is deliverance
From Hebrew Yehoshua, built from the divine name and the root for salvation or rescue.
Yehoshua → Iesous → Iosue → Josué → Josue
How it traveled
The name begins as Hebrew Yehoshua, borne in the Hebrew Bible by the leader who took the Israelites into Canaan after Moses and who gives his name to the Book of Joshua. When Jewish translators rendered the scriptures into Greek, Yehoshua became Iesous; Latin Bibles wrote it Iosue, and from that Latin spelling came Spanish and Portuguese Josué.

Out loud, and in short
Cruz
KROOZ
One syllable throughout. English speakers say it with a z at the end; Latin American Spanish uses a softer s sound, and much of Spain uses a th. In American English it sounds identical to the surname Cruise.
- Cruzito — Spanish diminutive, used within families rather than as a name on paper.
- Cruzy — An informal English playground shortening; not established as an independent given name.
Josue
ho-SWEH
That is the Spanish pronunciation, stress on the last syllable, with a breathy h. In Portuguese and French it is close to zho-ZWEH. English speakers unfamiliar with the name often try JOSS-oo-ay or ho-SOO-ay, so expect to correct it now and then.
- Josh — Borrowed from the English Joshua; common in English-speaking settings, school and work.
- Jos — Informal clipping, mostly in writing and texting.
- Sue — Rare, family-only shortening from the second syllable.

The trade-offs, name by name
Cruz
Strengths
- One syllable and four letters — it is spelled the way it sounds in both English and Spanish, and rarely needs repeating.
- Works unchanged in Spanish, Portuguese and English, so it crosses between a bilingual family's two languages without adjustment.
- A long, unbroken written record as a surname across Spain, Latin America and the Philippines before it was ever a first name.
To consider
- It is a very well-known surname, so some people will first read it as a last name and may ask which it is. That settles quickly, but it will come up on forms and rosters.
- In American English it is a homophone of Cruise, which invites the obvious film-star remark. Most bearers hear it a few times and then it fades.
- The meaning is explicitly Christian, and the name grew out of devotion to the cross. Worth knowing if you would rather the meaning stayed neutral — or worth knowing if that is exactly the point.
Josue
Strengths
- The same name as Joshua, so its history and meaning are well documented and instantly recognizable once the connection is explained.
- Spelled identically in Spanish, Portuguese and French, which makes it travel well across families and borders.
- A documented line running from the Hebrew Bible through Greek and Latin scripture into modern Romance languages.
To consider
- The Spanish spelling carries an accent, Josué, and US records generally drop it. Decide early which version goes on official documents, and expect the accent to vanish in forms and databases either way.
- Pronunciation splits along language lines: ho-SWEH among Spanish speakers, various English approximations elsewhere. Most people named Josue end up answering to both.
- Outside its strongest regions the name is less familiar, so it may be heard as Joshua or asked to be spelled. It has been in American records for a century, which makes the correction an easy one.
