The story of Jade
Spanish speakers in sixteenth-century Mexico met a hard green stone that Mesoamerican peoples valued highly and used as a remedy for pains of the flank, and called it piedra de ijada. French borrowed the phrase and reduced it to le jade; English took jade from French in the eighteenth century, first as a mineral term and only much later as a name for a person. It joined English given names in the wave of gemstone and flower names — Ruby, Pearl, Opal, Violet — and unlike most of that group it has kept a place on the charts ever since. It is now used across several languages with the spelling untouched.
