The story of Georgia
Georgia O'Keeffe painted flowers very large, on the straightforward logic that nobody looks at a small one, and critics decided almost immediately that the paintings were about female anatomy. The reading was proposed by her husband, who was promoting her work, and it stuck for the rest of the century. She denied it consistently and with visible irritation for about fifty years, pointing out that people were describing their own associations and attributing them to her. Art historians have gone round the question repeatedly since. What is not in dispute is that she outlived every critic who explained her to herself, painted into her nineties, and was still saying it at the end.
Meaning
farmer
The Greek name behind it joins the words for earth and work, and the reading is settled. The state is named after a British king and the country is not named after either.
