Where it comes from

The story of Georgia

Georgia O'Keeffe painted flowers very large, on the straightforward logic that nobody looks at a small one, and critics decided almost immediately that the paintings were about female anatomy. The reading was proposed by her husband, who was promoting her work, and it stuck for the rest of the century. She denied it consistently and with visible irritation for about fifty years, pointing out that people were describing their own associations and attributing them to her. Art historians have gone round the question repeatedly since. What is not in dispute is that she outlived every critic who explained her to herself, painted into her nineties, and was still saying it at the end.

Meaning

farmer

The Greek name behind it joins the words for earth and work, and the reading is settled. The state is named after a British king and the country is not named after either.

Georgia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1919, with 23 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Georgia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled and can be given in one word.
  • It works in English, Italian and Greek households with only a shift of vowel.
  • Georgie and Gia are both available as short forms and are very different in register.
What to consider
  • It is the name of an American state and of a country, so it carries two strong geographical associations at once.
  • This spelling goes overwhelmingly to girls but is recorded for boys as well, so a form will occasionally guess wrong.
  • A very famous song owns the name for a certain generation of listeners.
