Where each name comes from
Gabriella
God is my strength
From the Hebrew Gavri'el, built from a root meaning strong man or hero plus El, God — rendered in English as "God is my strength" or "man of God". The feminine -a ending is Italian.
Gavri'el → Gabriel → Gabriella
How it traveled
The root is Hebrew: Gavri'el, the angel who interprets visions in the Book of Daniel, brings the annunciation in the Gospel of Luke, and is known as Jibril in Islamic tradition. Through Greek and Latin scripture the name reached every corner of Christian Europe as Gabriel, and Romance languages made feminine forms from it — Gabriella in Italian, Gabrielle in French, Gabriela in Spanish, Portuguese and Polish.
Georgia
farmer
The Greek name behind it joins the words for earth and work, and the reading is settled. The state is named after a British king and the country is not named after either.
Georgios → Georgia
How it traveled
Georgia O'Keeffe painted flowers very large, on the straightforward logic that nobody looks at a small one, and critics decided almost immediately that the paintings were about female anatomy. The reading was proposed by her husband, who was promoting her work, and it stuck for the rest of the century.
Where a reading is contested the note says so — this page does not turn a guess into a fact. The chain is each name's recorded forms, oldest first; the story is its opening, told in full on the name's own page.
Out loud, and in short
Gabriella
gab-ree-EL-uh
Four syllables with the stress on EL. Italian and Spanish speakers give the r a lighter tap; in English it is usually smoothed to gab-ree-EL-uh or, quickly, gab-BREL-uh.
- Gabby — The most common English short form; informal, and given as a name on its own by some families.
- Gabi — Also spelled Gaby or Gabbi; the usual short form in Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking families.
- Ella — Taken from the end of the name rather than the start; stands fully on its own as a given name.
- Brie — Informal, drawn from the middle syllable; more common among younger bearers.
- Also Gia, Gabriella.
Georgia
JOR-juh
Three syllables on paper and two or three in speech depending on the speaker. The Italian form is said JOR-jah.
- Georgie — The affectionate form; works for a child of either sex.
- Gia — Built from the back of the name; a name in its own right.
One short form, two names
- Gabriella and Georgia both shorten to Gia.

The trade-offs, name by name
Gabriella
Strengths
- Recognized in Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Polish and Hungarian with little or no adjustment — a name that travels without translation.
- An unusually deep bench of short forms: Gabby, Gabi, Ella, Brie, Gia. The child can pick a register rather than inherit one.
- A documented line running back to Hebrew scripture, with the masculine Gabriel in continuous use for well over a thousand years.
To consider
- Gabriella and Gabriela are both standard, and Gabrielle is right beside them. Expect a lifetime of confirming how many l's — and of being handed the wrong one on coffee cups and class lists.
- In English, "gabby" is an everyday word for talkative, and the most obvious nickname lands right on it. Worth knowing before it arrives from a classmate rather than from you.
- Four syllables is a lot next to a short surname or a long one; saying the whole thing aloud a few times tells you more than reading it will.
Georgia
Strengths
- The meaning is settled and can be given in one word.
- It works in English, Italian and Greek households with only a shift of vowel.
- Georgie and Gia are both available as short forms and are very different in register.
To consider
- It is the name of an American state and of a country, so it carries two strong geographical associations at once.
- This spelling goes overwhelmingly to girls but is recorded for boys as well, so a form will occasionally guess wrong.
- A very famous song owns the name for a certain generation of listeners.
