Nature names in real use

Before the names

Rather than listing every plant in the botanical dictionary, we checked the birth records — these nature names are in genuine, current use, each shown with its real rank.

This is no fringe style anymore: eleven of the current girls' top-100 are nature words, from Violet at #13 to Juniper at #100, with Lily, Hazel, Ivy, Willow, Iris, Ruby, Daisy, Autumn and Jade between them. On the girls' side, nature is now simply part of the mainstream.

The two sexes draw from different shelves. Girls' nature names are overwhelmingly botanical — flowers, trees, seasons. The boys' list runs to landscape and wildlife: Ridge, Stone, Canyon, Bear, Fox and Wolf, with River and Rowan carrying the chart end. The vocabularies barely overlap, and the ranks show both are in real use.

Most of this wave is a revival, not an invention. Hazel peaked at #18 back in 1897 and has climbed all the way back; Daisy's best year on record was 1880. The data marks these as comebacks — names that rested a full century before returning, which is the most reliable pattern the records know.

The same records hold the caution. Amber reached #13 in 1986 and now sits near #520; Heather touched #3 in 1975 and rests far lower still. A nature word is not immune to fashion — it rides the same waves as any other name, and the note beside each one shows where on the wave it stands.
