The word is old: hrycg in Old English meant a back or spine, and by extension the long crest of high ground, which is the meaning English kept. From the Middle Ages onward it worked as a place-describing surname — at the Ridge, of the Ridge — for families settled along such land, in the same family of English surnames as Hill, Bank and Combe. The jump to a given name happened in the United States, where surnames and plain landscape words have long been turned into first names, and it has appeared in American birth records for generations before its recent climb.
