Halle
Feminine
Halle is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 16,651 girls against 6 boys since 1880.
Halle arrives at its two syllables from more than one direction — an old English pet form clipped shorter, a Norse man's name, a German salt town on the Saale. In American mouths it settles into something easy and unhurried, HAL-ee, with the ready short form Hal sitting inside it. Quiet for a long stretch, it is being handed out again.

The story of Halle
The English-language Halle is most often a trimmed Hallie, the nineteenth-century pet form of Harriet that stood on its own in American records long before the shorter spelling did. Separately, Halle has been a men's name in Norway for centuries, from the Old Norse element meaning stone, and Halle is a real German city, old enough that its salt trade named it. The American story of the spelling owes a good deal to Cleveland: the Halle Brothers department store, run by the Halle family from the late nineteenth century, is where the actress Halle Berry's name came from. Her career gave the four-letter form a shape and a sound that most Americans could already picture.

Not established
Three serious readings sit behind the same spelling. As a shortening of Hallie, it descends from Harriet — the English form of Henriette, from a Germanic name meaning roughly "home ruler." As a Norwegian and Icelandic name (borne by men), Halle goes back to Old Norse hallr, "stone, boulder." And Halle is a German city whose name is linked to its ancient salt works. Which road an individual Halle came down usually depends on the family.

Rhymes with "alley," the way Halle Berry says it. Two other pronunciations circulate: HAH-lee, and the German city's HAH-luh. Expect to correct people occasionally, and expect the correction to stick after one telling.

The Wendi test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Halle's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Wendi climbed just as high around 1971, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Wendi's path sketches the road Halle is walking now.
Halle is on its second act. Revived names age gently: the generation that wore them first is far enough away that the name feels classic rather than dated.

The trade-off
- Short, two syllables, no silent letters — spellable by a child on the first day of kindergarten.
- Comes with ready-made short forms: Hal, and the longer Hallie if a fuller version is ever wanted.
- A widely known bearer means most Americans have heard the name said aloud and will not stumble over it.
- Recognizable well beyond English — a name in Norway, a city in Germany — so it travels without becoming unreadable.
- The Hallie/Hailey/Haley cluster is crowded, and Halle will be misspelled into one of them often enough that spelling it out becomes routine.
- Pronunciation is not fully settled: some readers will try HAH-lee or the German HAH-luh before they hear it from you.
- One famous bearer dominates the association for most American adults. That may fade with the next generation, but for now the name arrives with her attached.
- In Norway and Iceland the related forms are men's names — worth knowing if the family has ties there, though it changes nothing about how the name reads in the US.
