The story of Reyna
The root is Latin regina, the feminine of rex, which passed into Spanish as reina — spelled reyna in older texts, before Spanish standardized the i. As a given name it belongs to the same devotional family as Regina, long used in Catholic Europe in reference to Mary as queen of heaven, and it was also carried by Sephardic Jewish families, for whom Reina was a familiar women's name in Judeo-Spanish. Reyna traveled to the United States along Spanish-speaking routes, both as a given name and as a surname, and has appeared in American records continuously for more than a century.
Meaning
Queen
From Spanish reina, itself from Latin regina, feminine of rex, 'king'. The y-spelling reflects older Spanish orthography, in which reyna was the standard written form.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Karli test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Reyna's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Karli climbed just as high around 1994, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Karli's path sketches the road Reyna is walking now.
Reyna sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Reads correctly on sight for most English and Spanish speakers alike — two syllables, no silent letters, no hidden stress.
- The meaning is transparent rather than reconstructed: anyone who speaks Spanish knows the word.
- Belongs to a large documented family — Regina, Reina, Reine — so it has relatives in several languages.
- Has been present in American records for over a century without ever crowding a classroom.
- Short forms already exist and are in real use, chiefly Rey.
- Reina and Reyna are both live spellings, so expect to specify which one, often more than once. Neither is a misspelling of the other, which is exactly why forms and teachers will guess.
- It sits close to Rayna and Raina, names with different roots, and the three get mixed up in writing.
- 'Queen' is a plain, legible meaning to a great many people, not a buried etymology — worth knowing that it will occasionally be remarked on out loud.
- Familiar without being everywhere: recognizable to most people, but a Reyna will rarely meet another.
