It reaches back through Old French joie to Latin, and English speakers have been giving it to daughters since the Middle Ages. It is familiar without being everywhere, and it charts in France as well as here.

Where it comes from

The story of Joy

The word arrived in English with Norman French — joie — and by the medieval period it was already being used as a given name for women, recorded in forms like Joia and Joye. It gained a second life among seventeenth-century English Puritans, who favored abstract virtue names and gave Joy alongside Hope, Grace and Mercy; those families carried the habit to North America. From there Joy stayed in quiet, continuous English-language use, helped along by the fact that it never needed translating: the name and the word are the same three letters. It has also long done duty as a middle name, tucked between a longer first and last.

Meaning

joy, gladness

From Middle English and Old French joie, which comes from Latin gaudia, the plural of gaudium, 'gladness'.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Spelled exactly like the ordinary English word, so it is never misspelled and never needs repeating.
  • One syllable — it sits easily in front of long or short surnames, and works as a middle name.
  • A documented record in English going back to the Middle Ages, with a second wave among Puritan virtue names.
  • Recognized outside English too: it currently charts in France, and Italian has its own form, Gioia.
What to consider
  • A word name invites wordplay. Expect 'a joy to have in class', Christmas-carol jokes in December, and the occasional remark when the child is in a bad mood.
  • In the US, Joy is also a long-running dish-soap brand — harmless, but it comes up.
  • Strongly represented among older generations, so some people will assume it is short for Joyce. That fades quickly once they meet the child.
