The story of Bobbie
Robert arrived in England in 1066 and was among the commonest men's names in the country within two generations. English clipped it to Rob and then rhymed it into Bob — the same habit that gave Bill from Will and Peg from Meg. Naming daughters after fathers was ordinary in nineteenth and twentieth-century America, and Bobbie went onto the girls' registers in real numbers, peaking around 1934.
Meaning
bright fame
Through Robert or Roberta, from the Germanic hrod, 'fame', and beraht, 'bright'. Both elements were extremely productive: hrod also gives Roger and Roland, beraht gives Albert, Herbert and Bertha. The compound is transparent and undisputed.

The Mable test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Bobbie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Mable climbed just as high around 1905, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Mable's path sketches the road Bobbie is walking now.
Bobbie sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
