The story of Bobbie
Robert arrived in England in 1066 and was among the commonest men's names in the country within two generations. English clipped it to Rob and then rhymed it into Bob, a habit it applied to a handful of very common medieval names and to nothing since. The affectionate stretch Bobby or Bobbie followed, and the -ie spelling was the American preference in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century; masculine Bobbie peaked around 1929.
Meaning
bright fame
Through Robert, from the Germanic hrod, 'fame', and beraht, 'bright'. Both elements were highly productive: hrod also gives Roger and Roland, beraht gives Albert, Herbert and Bertha. The compound is transparent and undisputed.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Bobbie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Grady climbed just as high around 1911, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Grady's path sketches the road Bobbie is walking now.
Bobbie sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
