Lew
Masculine · “famous in battle”
Lew is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 2,193 boys against 15 girls since 1880.
Lew is a short form that outgrew its parents. It can come from Lewis, from Louis, or from the Welsh Llewellyn, and by the nineteenth century American men were being given it outright, with nothing longer on the certificate. Three letters, one syllable, and no way of telling from the outside which of the three names it came out of.

The story of Lew
Louis came to England as Lewis with the Normans and stayed; Llewellyn is native Welsh and older than either. Both shorten the same way, and in nineteenth-century America the short form was often the whole name. Lew Wallace, a Union general who wrote Ben-Hur while serving as a territorial governor, gave the name a national profile — his novel was the best-selling American book of its century, outselling everything until Gone with the Wind. Names attached to a single very famous man tend to spike and settle, and this one settled quickly into the plain, friendly register it still has.
Meaningscholars disagree
famous in battle, if it is Lewis or Louis
Lewis and Louis are the same Germanic name, from hlud, loud or famous, and wig, battle or war — the name of eighteen French kings. Llewellyn is a separate Welsh name entirely, and its own meaning is disputed; the readings offered involve either a lion or a leader, and neither is secure. A Lew may be standing on either line.

The trade-off
- Three letters and one syllable — nothing shorter is possible without losing the name.
- It is plain and unpretentious in a way that reads as friendly rather than casual.
- It has been in American use for as long as there have been American records, so it is traditional rather than clipped.
- People will assume it is short for something and ask what, and a man will answer that question all his life.
- It is easily confused in writing with Lou, which is the same sound from a different parent name.
- It belongs strongly to an older American generation, and a boy carrying it now will be unusual among his own age.
- Nearly every child given this spelling is a boy; the record's few girls are outliers.
