Where it comes from

The story of Barney

English has always shortened names ruthlessly, and by the nineteenth century Barney had detached from both parents and was given outright. It was particularly common in Ireland, where Barnabas and Bernard were both well used, and it traveled to America with Irish migration. That is why the name reads as Irish to many Americans even though neither of its parent names is.

Meaning

a short form of Barnabas or Bernard

Two roads meet here. Barnabas is Aramaic, given in the New Testament as 'son of encouragement'. Bernard is Germanic, from bern, 'bear', and hard, 'brave'. Barney serves both and has for centuries.

Barney sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1918, with 299 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Warm and immediately informal, because it is a diminutive by construction.
  • It gives a family two possible formal names to sit behind it, Barnabas or Bernard, with very different characters.
  • Short, phonetic and unambiguous in writing.
What to consider
  • A large purple television dinosaur carried this name through the 1990s, and for parents of a certain age that is the first association.
  • As a standalone diminutive it can read as informal in adult settings, which a longer formal name would solve.
