Finley comes from the Gaelic name Fionnlagh, carried by Scottish and Irish families for centuries before it crossed the Atlantic — first as a surname, then, as so often happens, back to the front of the name. It is two easy syllables that land where they are expected, and it arrives with Finn already built in.

Finley first appears in US birth records in 1989 — 36 years ago. The typical Finley is a kid of about 8 — this name's wave is very recent. About 23,000 people named Finley are estimated to be alive in the US today.

From Fionnlagh to Finley
The story of Finley
The source is Scottish Gaelic Fionnlagh, with an Irish cousin in Fionnlaoch, both built on fionn — 'fair'. Gaelic families turned it into surnames, among them Ó Fionnlaoich, which English-speaking clerks wrote down as Finley, Finlay and Findlay depending on the ear and the day. Scots and Irish emigration brought all three spellings to North America, where Finley served for generations as a family surname before American parents began using it again as a first name. It has never left the record here, and it still charts in England and Wales, where the Finlay spelling has long been at home.
Meaning
fair warrior, or fair-haired hero
The first element is Gaelic fionn, 'fair, white, bright'. The second has been read as 'warrior' and as 'hero'; either way the sense of the whole is the same.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Trisha test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Finley's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Trisha climbed just as high around 1979, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Trisha's path sketches the road Finley is walking now.
Finley sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Comes with Finn ready-made — a short form that needs no explaining and stands on its own.
- One name that travels to boys and girls alike; the spelling itself carries no built-in split.
- A documented Gaelic line behind it, from Fionnlagh through the surname Finley, rather than a recent coinage.
- Familiar in Britain as well as the US, so the sound carries across English-speaking countries.
- A steady presence in American records rather than a spike — recognizable without being crowded.
- Finley, Finlay, Findlay and Finnley all exist and all sound identical, so expect to spell it aloud fairly often.
- Recorded for both boys and girls, leaning to boys without settling there. Strangers reading it on a form may guess wrong either way, and for a girl the guess will usually be the boy's.
- Finn is common enough as a full name that a child who goes by it may share it in a classroom, even while Finley itself stays uncommon.
- Most Finleys in the US are still young, so the name reads as a children's name for now — that changes on its own as they grow.
