Where each name comes from
Finley
fair warrior, or fair-haired hero
The first element is Gaelic fionn, 'fair, white, bright'. The second has been read as 'warrior' and as 'hero'; either way the sense of the whole is the same.
Fionnlagh → Fionnlaoch → Finlay / Findlay → Finley
How it traveled
The source is Scottish Gaelic Fionnlagh, with an Irish cousin in Fionnlaoch, both built on fionn — 'fair'. Gaelic families turned it into surnames, among them Ó Fionnlaoich, which English-speaking clerks wrote down as Finley, Finlay and Findlay depending on the ear and the day.
Holly
the holly tree
The English word for the evergreen shrub with spined leaves and red berries, used directly as a name from the nineteenth century onwards. The reading is not in dispute. The word itself is old English and has no connection to the word holy, despite the resemblance and despite a great deal of folk explanation to the contrary; the two have different vowels historically and different roots.
An Old English word for the evergreen shrub → Brought indoors at midwinter before Christmas existed → Taken as a personal name in the nineteenth century → In common American use through the twentieth
How it traveled
The plant's midwinter role is older than the festival attached to it. An evergreen that fruits in December is genuinely remarkable in a northern climate, and cutting it and bringing it inside is the kind of practice that arises independently wherever the conditions are the same.

Out loud, and in short
Finley
FIN-lee
Stress on the first syllable. The Scottish spellings Finlay and Findlay are said the same way.
- Finn — The standard short form, and a well-established given name in its own right.
- Fin — The same shortening, spelled to match Finley.
- Finny — Informal, mostly used within families and in early childhood.
- Lee — Occasional, drawn from the second syllable; also a stand-alone name.
Holly
HOL-ee
Two syllables, stress on the first, said exactly as the plant. It is not the word holy, which has a long o; the two are distinct in every English accent and are constantly confused in writing anyway.
- Holl — The name minus its ending, which is blunt and used mostly among friends.
- Hols — British in feel, and unfortunately identical to a colloquial word for holidays.
- Lolly — Built by changing one letter, which is a habit English applies to a handful of names.

The trade-offs, name by name
Finley
Strengths
- Comes with Finn ready-made — a short form that needs no explaining and stands on its own.
- One name that travels to boys and girls alike; the spelling itself carries no built-in split.
- A documented Gaelic line behind it, from Fionnlagh through the surname Finley, rather than a recent coinage.
To consider
- Finley, Finlay, Findlay and Finnley all exist and all sound identical, so expect to spell it aloud fairly often.
- Recorded for both boys and girls, leaning to boys without settling there. Strangers reading it on a form may guess wrong either way, and for a girl the guess will usually be the boy's.
- Finn is common enough as a full name that a child who goes by it may share it in a classroom, even while Finley itself stays uncommon.
Holly
Strengths
- Nobody will ever mispronounce it or need it spelled twice.
- The meaning is concrete, seasonal and pleasant, and can be explained in a sentence.
- It works on the register for either child, which the record confirms.
To consider
- It is strongly seasonal, and a child born in July will hear about it.
- It is confused in writing with the word holy, which is a different word entirely.
- It reads as belonging to a particular late-twentieth-century moment in American naming.
