Where each name comes from
Finley
fair warrior, or fair-haired hero
The first element is Gaelic fionn, 'fair, white, bright'. The second has been read as 'warrior' and as 'hero'; either way the sense of the whole is the same.
Fionnlagh → Fionnlaoch → Finlay / Findlay → Finley
How it traveled
The source is Scottish Gaelic Fionnlagh, with an Irish cousin in Fionnlaoch, both built on fionn — 'fair'. Gaelic families turned it into surnames, among them Ó Fionnlaoich, which English-speaking clerks wrote down as Finley, Finlay and Findlay depending on the ear and the day.
Florence
flowering
The Latin name of the city means flowering or prosperous, and the reading is not in dispute. The personal name comes from the city rather than from the adjective directly, which is a distinction worth keeping: it is a place name used as a name, in the nineteenth-century manner, rather than a virtue or a description applied to a child.
The Latin name of an Italian city → Taken as a personal name in the nineteenth century → Extremely common in America around nineteen hundred → A long absence and a return, in Britain first
How it traveled
She went to the Crimea, found that far more soldiers were dying of disease than of wounds, and came back determined to prove it to a government that did not want to hear it. Ordinary tables of figures were being ignored, so she developed a circular diagram in which each month is a wedge and the area of the wedge shows the deaths, colored to separate disease from injury, and the shape of the thing is impossible to misread: an enormous blue mass of preventable death dwarfing everything else.

Out loud, and in short
Finley
FIN-lee
Stress on the first syllable. The Scottish spellings Finlay and Findlay are said the same way.
- Finn — The standard short form, and a well-established given name in its own right.
- Fin — The same shortening, spelled to match Finley.
- Finny — Informal, mostly used within families and in early childhood.
- Lee — Occasional, drawn from the second syllable; also a stand-alone name.
Florence
FLOR-unce
Two syllables, stress on the first, with the second reduced almost to nothing. French says the same spelling with the stress at the back and a nasal vowel, which makes it a noticeably different name.
- Flo — The shortest form, plain and older-sounding than the full name.
- Florrie — The affectionate Victorian form, which has come back in Britain ahead of the full name.
- Ren — Cut from the back, unisex and thoroughly modern in feel.

The trade-offs, name by name
Finley
Strengths
- Comes with Finn ready-made — a short form that needs no explaining and stands on its own.
- One name that travels to boys and girls alike; the spelling itself carries no built-in split.
- A documented Gaelic line behind it, from Fionnlagh through the surname Finley, rather than a recent coinage.
To consider
- Finley, Finlay, Findlay and Finnley all exist and all sound identical, so expect to spell it aloud fairly often.
- Recorded for both boys and girls, leaning to boys without settling there. Strangers reading it on a form may guess wrong either way, and for a girl the guess will usually be the boy's.
- Finn is common enough as a full name that a child who goes by it may share it in a classroom, even while Finley itself stays uncommon.
Florence
Strengths
- It is completely familiar, universally spellable and needs no explaining.
- Flo, Florrie and Ren are three very different registers from one certificate.
- It carries a real city and a genuinely formidable historical bearer.
To consider
- It was associated with a very distant generation for most of the twentieth century, and that association is only now fading.
- The revival is much further along in Britain than in America.
- The spelling is on the register for boys as well, which reflects an older Irish usage.
