Where it comes from
From patricius to Trisha
The story of Trisha
Patricia was rare in English until the twentieth century and then rose very fast, generating short forms from both ends: Pat and Patty from the front, Tricia and Trish from the back. The back-half forms arrived later and read as more modern for that reason. Tricia's spelling does not obviously produce its sound, so Trisha was coined to fix that — a straightforward phonetic respelling — and it peaked in the mid-1970s.
Meaning
noble, patrician
Through Patricia, from the Latin patricius, 'nobleman' — a member of the hereditary patrician order of Rome, defined against the plebeians. Patrick is the masculine of the same word, so the whole family shares one Roman class term.
