The story of Janey
England used Joan as the feminine of John for four centuries before Jane displaced it in the sixteenth, apparently through a French form. Jane became one of the plainest and most-used English women's names — so plain that plain Jane became a phrase. Janey is its affectionate form and was registered as a name in its own right in nineteenth-century American records, alongside Hattie, Effie and Nellie.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
