Khloe
Feminine · “Green shoot”
Khloe is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 49,923 girls against 20 boys since 1880.
Behind the K sits one of the oldest continuously used names in Europe: Chloe, from the Greek word for the first green shoot pushing up through a spring field. It is two syllables that end on a bright vowel, easy to call across a yard, and the K spelling happens to match the way scholars transliterate the Greek letter chi — kh — so the newest-looking version is, by accident, the most literal one.

The story of Khloe
Χλόη (Khloē) belonged to the vocabulary of Greek agriculture before it belonged to anyone in particular — the tender green of new growth, and a title of Demeter in that role. It reached readers as a name through Longus's second-century romance Daphnis and Chloe, and through Paul's first letter to the Corinthians, which greets the household of a woman called Chloe. English-speaking Protestants picked it up after the Reformation, pastoral poets kept it alive through the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and it settled into ordinary use. Khloe is a recent American respelling of that long line, part of a broader fashion for swapping a C or Ch for a K.
Meaning

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The trade-off
- Everyone already knows how to say it; the spelling is the only thing that ever needs explaining.
- Short, two syllables, ends on a clear vowel — it carries well when called and pairs easily with most surnames.
- The underlying name has been in continuous use since antiquity, with forms in Greek, French, Spanish and Italian.
- Established short forms exist ready-made: Khlo, Klo-Klo, Lo.
- The Kh- matches the standard scholarly transliteration of the Greek chi, so the modern spelling has an old logic behind it.
- Chloe is the default spelling in English, so this version will be corrected and re-spelled fairly often — on forms, in emails, at the doctor's office. Most Khloes learn to say "with a K" early and think nothing of it.
- For many Americans the K spelling is strongly tied to one very well-known public figure. That association may fade with time, but it is the first thing some adults will think of.
- The Kh- respelling belongs clearly to a recent window in American naming, which means it dates the name in a way Chloe does not. The child can always fall back on the classic spelling if she wants to.
- Its wave is recent enough that a Khloe will rarely meet another one her own age, and almost never an older namesake.
