Evie
Feminine · “Life" or "living”
Evie is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 21,857 girls against 92 boys since 1880.
Evie began as the affectionate short form of Eve — the name given in Genesis to the first woman, glossed there as the mother of all living. It has been shortened that way in English households for well over a century, and somewhere along the line the nickname stopped needing the longer name behind it. Two syllables, both open and easy, and it is now written on birth certificates in the United States, England, Wales and Scotland alike.

The story of Evie
Chavvah in Hebrew became Eua in the Greek of the Septuagint and Eva in the Latin Vulgate, which is how the name reached medieval Europe. English took it as Eve, and English speakers did to it what they do to most short names — added the -ie ending, the same one that turns Anne into Annie and Margaret into Maggie. Evie shows up in that role in nineteenth-century Britain and America, first as a household form and gradually as a name in its own right. Its recent revival came through the same door, arriving alongside Eva, Ava and Evelyn as short, vowel-heavy names returned to favor across the English-speaking world.

"Life" or "living," through Eve
Evie is a pet form, and its meaning depends on which name stands behind it. Through Eve — Hebrew Chavvah — it carries the sense of life or living. Through Evelyn it goes back to the Norman French Aveline, whose own root is not settled; through Genevieve it reaches an Old Germanic compound that scholars still argue over. Used on its own, most parents take the Eve reading.

The Carmela test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Evie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Carmela climbed just as high around 1923, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Carmela's path sketches the road Evie is walking now.
Evie is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- Short, phonetic and spelled the way it sounds — most people get it right on first hearing.
- Works either as a full given name or as the short form of Eve, Eva, Evelyn or Genevieve, so it can be grown into or out of.
- Established on the charts in England, Wales and Scotland as well as the United States, so it travels without explanation in English-speaking countries.
- Traceable in an unbroken line back through Latin Eva and Greek Eua to Hebrew Chavvah.
- The spelling competes with Evy, Evee and Eevee — the last being a well-known Pokémon, which some children will bring up. Evie is the majority spelling, but expect to confirm it now and then.
- It sits in a crowded sound-family: Ava, Eva, Evelyn, Ivy and Eden are all in wide use, and mishearings between them are common on the phone.
- The name is climbing, and steadily. A child born now may meet more Evies at fifteen than at five, even though she is unlikely to share a classroom with one.
- Because it began as a nickname, some people will ask what it is short for. That is easy to answer, and easier still if you have decided in advance whether the answer is "nothing."
