The story of Cloe
Chloe appears in the New Testament as a woman in Corinth whose household sent word to Paul, and that single mention is why the name survived into Christian use at all. English took it up after the Reformation and then again through pastoral poetry, where Chloe was a stock name for a shepherdess. Spanish and Italian, which have no use for a silent h, write it Cloe, and that is the spelling that reaches United States records with Spanish-speaking families. The two forms are one name and sound identical.
Meaning
green shoot; new growth
Greek chloe means the young green growth of a plant in spring. It was used as an epithet of Demeter, the goddess of grain, in her aspect as the one who brings the new crop up. The reading is undisputed. The h is silent in English and absent altogether in Spanish and Italian spelling, which is why Cloe exists.

Pronouncing Cloe
KLOH-ee
Two syllables, stress on the first, and the final e is fully sounded — it is not silent. Spanish says it the same way. English speakers meeting the h-less spelling sometimes try to make one syllable of it, which is the only real trap.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Danae test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Cloe's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Danae climbed just as high around 1991, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Danae's path sketches the road Cloe is walking now.
Cloe sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is exact, cheerful and tied to a season rather than to a virtue.
- Two syllables that sit easily in Spanish and English mouths without changing.
- Recognized everywhere through the Chloe spelling, so it never needs introducing.
- Chloe is the dominant English spelling, so this one will be corrected on forms.
- Some English readers will try to say it as one syllable before they hear it said.
