Where it comes from

The story of Emeline

Amelina was a Frankish woman's name that Norman French shortened to Ameline, and Norman settlers carried it to England after the Conquest, where it became Emeline and Emmeline and stayed in ordinary use through the Middle Ages. It faded, then returned in the nineteenth century along with the rest of the medieval revival — the same wave that brought back Edith, Maud and Hilda. American records show it clearly in that Victorian moment, and it has been coming back again since, spelled Emeline, Emmeline and Emmaline more or less interchangeably.

Meaning

work, labor — through the Germanic amal

Emeline is the English form of Old French Ameline, a diminutive of Amelina, from the Germanic element amal, which means work or labor in the sense of vigorous effort. It is the same root behind Amelia and Amalia. It has nothing to do with Emily, which comes from the Roman family name Aemilius, nor with Emma, whose root is ermen, 'whole'. Three names that look alike and share no ancestry at all.

Emeline sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2016, with 104 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Emeline went to 62 girls in 2025, but Emmeline is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 346, which makes it the 635th most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,116 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 4,645 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 25,924 for Emeline itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented thousand-year history in English, with a medieval record rather than a modern invention.
  • Em and Emmy are ready short forms and both are widely used already.
  • Its root is genuinely different from Emma's and Emily's, so it is not simply a variant of a common name.
What to consider
  • Emeline, Emmeline and Emmaline are all in use and the spelling will be asked for.
  • The two pronunciations of the ending are both correct, so the child will hear both.
  • The Em- opening puts it in a crowded room with Emma, Emily and Emerson.
