Harmony
Feminine · Greek roots · “agreement”
Harmony is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 36,226 girls against 39 boys since 1880.
Harmony comes into English from the Greek harmonia — a joining, a fitting together — by way of Latin and Old French, and it arrived with music already attached to it. In Greek myth, Harmonia was the daughter of Ares and Aphrodite and the wife of Cadmus, founder of Thebes. Three easy syllables, all of them saying what they look like.

The story of Harmony
The Greek harmonia meant a joint or fastening before it meant anything musical; the word for fitting boards together became the word for fitting notes together. Latin took it as harmonia, Old French as harmonie, and English inherited both the musical term and, eventually, the name. It joined the English stock of virtue names — the family of Charity, Patience, Constance, Verity — which English speakers have handed to daughters since the Reformation. It also settled onto the American map: the Harmony Society, a German pietist community, gave its name to Harmony in Pennsylvania and to New Harmony in Indiana in the early nineteenth century, and the word has been shorthand for a hoped-for kind of community ever since.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Harmony went to 1,123 girls in 2025, but Harmoni and Harmonii are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 1,436, which makes it the 231st most-given girls’ name of the year — 45 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 1,119 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 1,431 for Harmony itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Robyn test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Harmony's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Robyn climbed just as high around 1974, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Robyn's path sketches the road Harmony is walking now.
Harmony sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Reads and pronounces itself — anyone who knows the English word knows the name at first sight, with nothing to spell out over the phone.
- One dominant spelling, so the name is unlikely to be written a second way by mistake.
- A documented line back to Greek harmonia, with recognizable cousins in French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese.
- Belongs to the long-established English virtue-name family, which gives it a footing older than its current wave.
- It is a word before it is a name, so it will be commented on — the pun about a household being harmonious is unavoidable, and mostly harmless.
- The first syllable is the word "harm," and children do notice that sort of thing for a while.
- There is no settled, widely used short form, which matters if you like a full name that offers a ready-made everyday alternative.
- The name's rise is recent, so it currently sits mostly among younger bearers rather than reading as a name of every generation.
