Robyn
Feminine · “Bright fame”
Robyn is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 63,364 girls against 1,240 boys since 1880. See Robyn as a boy name
Robyn is the spelling that took the medieval nickname for Robert and gave it a lighter tail. Behind it sits a chain of ordinary affection: Robert clipped to Rob, softened with the old French diminutive -in, then handed on so widely that English speakers named a red-breasted garden bird after it. Two syllables, both easy, and a final -yn that made it a girl's name on paper without changing a sound.

The story of Robyn
Robert arrived in England with the Normans and became one of the most-used men's names of the Middle Ages; so common that it needed short forms, and Rob picked up the French diminutive ending -in. Robin then went everywhere — into the English outlaw ballads of Robin Hood, into surnames like Robinson, and onto the redbreast that English speakers had begun calling robin by the fifteenth century. In the twentieth century, English-speaking parents began using it for daughters, and the -yn spelling did the quiet work of signaling that on a page. Robyn has stayed in use since the early part of that century and still appears in the rankings in Scotland and in England and Wales.
Meaning
Bright fame — from the Germanic elements for 'fame' and 'bright'
Robyn is a form of Robin, itself a medieval pet form of Robert (Germanic hrod 'fame' + beraht 'bright'). The garden bird was nicknamed 'robin redbreast' after the human name, so the bird sense is a later companion to the meaning rather than its source.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Robyn went to 150 girls in 2025, but Robin and Robynn are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 558, which makes it the 484th most-given girls’ name of the year — 952 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 2,880 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 10,715 for Robyn itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Antoinette test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Robyn's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Antoinette climbed just as high around 1914, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Antoinette's path sketches the road Robyn is walking now.
Robyn sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Everyone can pronounce it on sight — the sound is identical to Robin, a word English speakers already know from the bird.
- Short forms are already in place and centuries old: Rob, Robbie, Bobbie.
- Charts in Scotland and in England and Wales as well as the US, so it travels without explanation in English-speaking countries.
- An unbroken record in American use since the early twentieth century, never vanishing and never crowding a classroom.
- The -yn will be corrected to -in for life, on forms, coffee cups and class lists. Nothing about the sound tells anyone which spelling you chose, so expect to say 'Robyn with a y' often.
- Robin travels to both boys and girls; Robyn leans strongly female in the US, but the spoken name gives no clue, so a phone call or an email may prompt a guess either way.
- It is well represented among adults and less so among young children right now, which means a Robyn today will likely share the name with grown-ups she meets rather than classmates.
