The bird is named after the man, not the other way round. English used to give birds human names: Robin redbreast, Jenny wren, Jackdaw, Tom tit, and the magpie, which is Mag — short for Margaret — plus the old word pie. Only Robin kept the name and dropped the bird.

Where it comes from

The story of Robynn

Giving birds and animals familiar human names was ordinary in medieval and early modern English, and a few of them stuck so hard that the original word disappeared. The redbreast became Robin redbreast and then simply the robin. The pie became the magpie once Mag was attached. The jackdaw was the daw with Jack in front. Robin itself came from Norman French, which made diminutives with -in, and it was so common in England that it produced the outlaw of the ballads and the surnames Robins, Robinson and Robson. The women's name is a twentieth-century derivative of the man's, and Robynn doubles the final n for the look of it.

Meaning

bright fame

Robin is a diminutive of Robert, from Germanic hrod, fame, and beraht, bright. Hrod is one of the most productive elements in old Germanic names: Roger, Roland, Rudolf, Roderick and Rodney all begin with it. The bird took the name in the fifteenth century and kept it after the naming habit died.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Robynn went to 8 girls in 2025, but Robin and Robyn are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 558, which makes it the 484th most-given girls’ name of the year — 10,433 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 2,880 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 200,908 for Robynn itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Germanic meaning with both elements traceable.
  • Two syllables that everyone can already say and nearly spell.
  • Three short forms, one of which serves either child.
What to consider
  • Robin and Robyn are both commoner, so three spellings compete and this one is the least used.
  • The bird association is permanent and children will make it.
  • It is strongly represented among older generations of American women and places the name in time.
