The story of Antoinette
Antonius was one of the great Roman houses, and Christian Europe kept the name through Saint Anthony. French formed Antoine and its diminutive feminine Antoinette, which Marie Antoinette made known across Europe. American families used it steadily from the nineteenth century, and it peaked around 1918.
Meaningnot established
Not established
From the Roman family name Antonius, generally taken to be Etruscan and pre-Latin, with no recoverable meaning. The reading 'priceless' that circulates with the name is a later folk etymology connecting it to the Greek anthos, 'flower'; it is not supported. The -ette ending carries affection rather than meaning.
