Where it comes from

The story of Kassie

Cassandra is a daughter of Priam who warns Troy about the horse and is disbelieved, having refused Apollo after accepting his gift of prophecy. The name reached English through the medieval retellings of the Trojan war, which were enormously popular, and it was in ordinary English use by the thirteenth century — long before anyone was reading Homer directly. Kassie is a modern American short form of it, spelled with a K, and it also serves Cassidy and Katherine.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Greek Kassandra has no settled derivation. The second half is generally read as aner, andros, 'man', which appears in many Greek names; the first is argued, with 'shining' and 'excelling' both proposed. Neither has carried. Kassie also serves as a short form of Cassidy, an Irish surname, and of Katherine, whose own meaning is equally unsettled. Nothing here is established.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kassie went to 55 girls in 2025, but Cassie is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 230, which makes it the 732nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,266 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 6,988 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 29,223 for Kassie itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Cassandra and Cassidy both stand behind it as full formal names if one is wanted.
  • Two easy syllables that every English speaker says correctly at first sight.
  • Six letters, nothing silent, and easy for a small child to write.
What to consider
  • Cassie is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected in writing.
  • It is a diminutive by construction and reads as informal on official documents.
  • The story attached to Cassandra is a bleak one, which some families weigh.
