Cassie is the short, two-syllable end of a much older name: Kassandra, the Trojan princess of Homer's Iliad, who has been spoken aloud for some three thousand years. It has also been the everyday form of Cassandra, Cassidy and Cassia in English-speaking homes for generations, and it has held its place on American records without a break for well over a century. Two flat vowels, a soft hiss in the middle — it is a name that carries easily across a yard.

Where it comes from

The story of Cassie

The oldest road to Cassie runs through Greek: Kassandra, daughter of Priam in the Iliad, whose story of prophecy disbelieved was retold by Aeschylus and by writers ever after. Latinized as Cassandra, the name traveled through medieval Europe and into English, where it was common enough by the later Middle Ages to be clipped in ordinary speech — Cass, Cassie. Two other roads join it: Cassia, a plant name from Greek by way of Hebrew, and Cassidy, an anglicization of the Irish Ó Caiside. By the nineteenth century Cassie was being written down in American records on its own, no longer only as someone's household nickname.

Meaningscholars disagree

Short form of Cassandra, a Greek name whose sense is disputed

Cassandra is built from two Greek elements, and scholars read them differently. One reading takes the first part from kekasmai, 'to excel, to shine', with andros, 'of man' — roughly 'shining over men'. Another reads the first element as 'to entangle', giving 'she who entangles men'. Cassie also serves as the short form of Cassia, from the Greek kasia, a fragrant bark related to cinnamon, and of the Irish surname-name Cassidy — so the meaning depends on which longer name stands behind it, if any.

#732
counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Cassie went to 175 girls in 2025, but Kassie is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 230, which makes it the 732nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 547 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 6,988 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 9,184 for Cassie itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Spelled the way it sounds and read correctly on first sight by nearly anyone; two syllables, easy to call across a room.
  • Comes with a ready formal option — Cassandra, Cassia or Cassidy on the certificate, Cassie in daily life — or works perfectly well on its own.
  • Long unbroken record in American use, so it reads as an established name rather than a new coinage.
  • Cass gives a genuinely different short form, useful later for anyone who wants something plainer.
What to consider
  • In English, 'a Cassandra' means someone who warns of trouble and is not believed — an idiom straight from the Trojan story. Most people never make the link with the nickname, but it is there in the dictionary.
  • Cassie, Cassy and Kassie all sound identical, so expect to spell it aloud on forms for life.
  • It sits close to Cassidy, Cassia and Cassandra, and some people will assume one of those is the 'real' name and use it.
  • It is well represented among grown women in the US, so a child may meet adult Cassies more often than classmates — though in a schoolyard she is unlikely to share it with anyone.
