Ryann is the Irish surname name Ryan given a second n — a small change that has carried it onto the girls' side of American records for over half a century. It keeps the same easy two-beat sound everyone already knows how to say, while the doubled ending does quiet work on paper. Behind it sits Ó Riain, one of the old family names of Tipperary and Limerick.

The story of Ryann
The line starts with the Irish surname Ó Riain, long associated with Tipperary and Limerick, anglicized as Ryan after centuries of English administration in Ireland. Irish emigration carried it across the Atlantic in enormous numbers in the nineteenth century, and in twentieth-century America the surname made the usual jump to a first name, mainly for boys. Ryann is the feminine respelling of that first name — the doubled consonant is a familiar American device for marking a girl's version of a name shared with boys, as in Bryn and Brynn or Jordan and Jordyn. It has been on the US girls' records since the early 1970s.
Meaningscholars disagree
from the Irish name Rian, often read as "little king"
The surname Ó Riain means "descendant of Rian", and that much is agreed. Rian itself is the puzzle: one reading connects it to Irish rí, "king", with a diminutive ending, giving "little king"; another takes it from rian, an Irish word for a path, track or course. Neither has won outright, and both are taken seriously.

- counting every spelling
The SSA counts spellings, not names. Ryann went to 174 girls in 2025, but Ryan, Rian and Riyan are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 604, which makes it the 453rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 832 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 2,661 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 9,237 for Ryann itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Brittnee test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Ryann's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Brittnee climbed just as high around 1989, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Brittnee's path sketches the road Ryann is walking now.
Ryann sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Everyone can already say it. The sound arrives with Ryan attached, so there is no teaching phase — only the spelling to sort out.
- The doubled n does real work on paper, signaling the girls' spelling to teachers and form-fillers before anyone meets the child.
- Comes with a ready-made short form in Ry, which has been used for this family of names for generations.
- Roots in a documented Irish surname, Ó Riain, which gives the name a traceable line rather than a blank space behind it.
- Common enough to look familiar, uncommon enough that a classroom will very likely have just the one.
- It will be written Ryan for life. The one-n spelling is the overwhelming default, so expect to spell it out on every form, every coffee cup and every school list.
- On paper, Ryan reads male to most Americans, and Ryann is close enough that misassumptions happen — in emails, on rosters, before anyone hears the voice on the phone.
- The stress can wobble between RYE-un and rye-ANN. Neither is wrong, but you will be correcting one of them.
- It rose and has eased back a little since, which in practice means a Ryann today shares the name with people mostly in their late teens and twenties rather than with her classmates.
