Our story of Rian
Ours, offered as ours. Ireland had a great many kings — a tuath of a few thousand people had one, and a rí ruirech was a king of kings above them — so calling a child a little king was a smaller claim there than it sounds now. The Irish rí is the same inherited word as Latin rex and Sanskrit raja. Ó Riain became O'Ryan and then Ryan, one of the most common Irish surnames.

About 1 girl in 2,661 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 55,423 for Rian itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off
- A settled Irish meaning with a deep Indo-European root behind it.
- Four letters and two syllables, about as easy to write as a name gets.
- The Irish spelling is a genuine and current one, not an invention.
- The Irish and American pronunciations differ at the first vowel.
- Ryan is far more common and predominantly a men's name.
- It is used for both sexes, so forms may guess wrong.
