Rian is an Old Irish personal name, and its clearest trace in the record is the surname built from it: Ó Riain, "descendant of Rian", long associated with the southeast of Ireland. That surname was anglicized as Ryan, and in the twentieth century Ryan crossed back over into use as a first name — which is how a great many people meet the name without ever seeing the older spelling. Rian itself never disappeared in Ireland, and it is the form used in Irish today. So the four-letter version a parent picks now is not a modern respelling of Ryan; it is the road Ryan came down.
