The story of Ryan
The name comes from Ireland, where Ó Riain was the surname of a family long associated with counties Carlow and Tipperary. Anglicized as Ryan, it became one of the most widespread Irish surnames, and Irish emigration carried it into the United States, Canada, Britain and Australia through the nineteenth century. The move from surname to first name happened largely in America in the twentieth century, part of a broad shift toward giving children family surnames as forenames. It rose steadily through the middle of that century, and remains most strongly represented in California, New York and Texas.
