The story of Christian
The Greek christianos was a label for the early followers of Jesus before it was ever anybody's name. Latin took it up as Christianus, and by the Middle Ages it was being given to children across Germany, Scandinavia and the Low Countries. Denmark leaned on it hardest: the name runs through its line of kings for centuries, and Christen and Kristian still turn up there. English speakers knew it partly through that continental use and partly through Bunyan's allegory, and it has been in steady English-language use ever since.
