Khristian
Masculine · “a follower of Christ”
Khristian is given to both — 2,801 boys and 559 girls since 1880. See Khristian as a girl nameSee other names given to both
The kh in Khristian is borrowed from transliteration. Russian and the other Slavic languages write this name with a letter that English has no equivalent for — a sound made further back in the throat than an h — and the standard way of romanizing it is kh. Applying that to an English name is a small act of borrowing across systems, and it makes the spelling look Eastern European even where it is not.

The story of Khristian
Christian has been in use as a personal name since the early Middle Ages and became royal in Denmark, where ten kings have carried it. In America it was steadily used and then rose sharply in the late twentieth century. Once a name is that common, respellings follow. This one takes the kh from Slavic transliteration — where Khristos and Khristina are ordinary romanizations — and applies it to an English name, producing a spelling that no Slavic country would use for this name and that no English tradition supplies either.
Meaning
a follower of Christ
From the Latin Christianus, and behind it the Greek christos, meaning anointed — a translation of the Hebrew mashiach. The anointing was with oil and it is what made a king or a priest, so the word is about a physical act before it is about anything else.

About 1 boy in 356 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 38,820 for Khristian itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Jacobo test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Khristian's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jacobo climbed just as high around 1910, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jacobo's path sketches the road Khristian is walking now.

The trade-off
- It sounds identical to a name everyone knows, so nothing needs explaining aloud.
- Kris, Chris and Ian are all available and could hardly be more different.
- The name behind it is royal in Denmark and standard across Europe.
- It works for a child of either sex in the record, though most are boys.
- Christian is the standard spelling and will be substituted on nearly everything.
- The kh will be read as an error by most people rather than as a deliberate borrowing.
- The difference is inaudible, so the letters have to be given every time.
