The story of Alain
Alan was a Breton name carried to England by Bretons who came with the Normans in 1066, and it became common there quickly. France kept Alain, which is the same name with French spelling and a nasal ending. It has been steadily used in France and in French-speaking Canada, and it reaches United States records both from French families and from English-speaking parents who wanted the French form rather than the plain one. Alain, Alan, Allen and Allan are all one name written four ways.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Nothing is settled. A Breton or Celtic word for rock has been proposed, and so has one for handsome. The most interesting theory connects the name to the Alans, an Iranian-speaking steppe people who moved west with the Huns and left settlements in Gaul, including in Brittany — which would make Alan an ethnic name like Britton or Frank. None of these has carried the field, and the name is older than the records that might have settled it.

The Winslow test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Alain's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Winslow climbed just as high around 1907, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Winslow's path sketches the road Alain is walking now.
Alain sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A short, familiar name in French, English, Breton and Spanish at once.
- Al is a ready short form that needs no explaining anywhere.
- Two syllables and five letters, with nothing difficult to say.
- Alan is the standard English spelling and this one will be corrected constantly.
- The French nasal ending does not survive an English-speaking classroom.
- Its meaning is genuinely unknown, so any gloss offered for it is a guess among three.
